Fact or myth? “You can’t get a sunburn if the sun isn’t shining.”
This is a MYTH. 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate the clouds therefore you can even get sunburn without the shining sun. It is also possible to sunburn while sitting in the shade! Ultraviolet (UVA) rays from the sun scatter and can bounce off of the air and to the shaded areas where we think we are safe.
Up to 80% of skin aging is due to UVA rays and UVA rays are present from sunrise to sunset every day all year round, even in the winter. So, instead of judging your risk based on the how sunny it is; wear sunscreen every day.
Lawtons Drugs offers all the protection you need to make sure you stay sun safe. If you still crave that bronzed glow, we carry a wide range of self tanners and lotions that gradually add a sun kissed look, without the damaging affects of the sun.

The sun’s rays can cause both acute (sunburn) and long-term (skin cancer, premature aging) skin damage. Make regular use of sunscreen part of your sun protection plan.
- Choose a sunscreen that is labeled “broad-spectrum." This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
- Sunscreen must be applied generously to give you the full benefit of its labeled sun protection. Most people do not apply enough – the average adults needs about 2 ½ tablespoons (37.5mL) per application.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating a lot.
- Use sunscreen even on cloudy days – up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate through cloud and fog.
- Don’t forget your lips! Apply a lip balm with at least SPF 15 every hour.
